Early Life

Turner’s mother, Anna Mae Bullock, was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, on November 26, 1939. She had two older sisters and was the youngest in the family. She was raised in Nutbush, Tennessee, and spent a brief period during World War II in Knoxville, Tennessee. After the war, the family returned to Nutbush, where Tina enrolled at Flagg Grove Elementary School. As a child, she was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church in Nutbush’s choir.

When Tina was eleven years old, her father remarried and relocated to Detroit, and her mother left the family. Tina and her sisters were consequently transferred to live in Brownsville, Tennessee, with their grandmother. After her grandmother passed away, she relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, to live with her mother. There, she attended Sumner High School and earned her diploma in 1958. She performed housework and was a nurse’s assistant at Barnes-Jewish Hospital during her adolescence.

Early Career

Tina first saw Ike Turner and his band, the Kings of Rhythm, perform when she and her sister started going to nightclubs in St. Louis. She eventually won Ike over with her singing abilities to the point that she was the featured vocalist for the group. Ike composed “A Fool in Love” 1960 for vocalist Art Lassiter. Since he had already paid for the studio time, Ike had Tina perform the lead instead of the backup vocals when Lassiter failed to show up.

Originally, he only planned to use the song featuring her vocals as a demo. Still, local DJ Dave Dixon persuaded him to send the record to Juggy Murray, the R&B company Sue Records owner. Impressed, Murray purchased the song and gave Ike a $25,000 advance for the song’s rights. Ike thus granted Tina the stage name “Tina Turner” and registered the name as a trademark.

Business Ventures

2009 saw Tina retire from performing live. But thanks to endeavors like “Tina,” a musical based on her life story that debuted in London in April 2018 and starred Adrienne Warren, she has managed to stay in the public eye. She has three books published as well.

In addition to her career in music, Tina has been a successful actor. The fantasy drama film “Tommy” (1975) featured her in her debut acting role. In the post-apocalyptic picture “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985), she co-starred with Mel Gibson and scored a commercial hit that brought in over $36 million in the US. The reviewers gave her performance in the movie positive reviews. After almost thirty years of renting in Switzerland, Erwin and Tina became property owners in 2021 after Erwin and Tina became citizens of Switzerland. The couple paid an estimated $76 million in December 2021 for a brand-new house on Lake Zurich’s shores.

The influence of Tina Turner went well beyond the recording studio. She made a difference and advocated for change using her platform in a society where injustice and inequality are commonplace. Her unwavering dedication to charitable work and generosity spoke volumes about her character and desire to give back.

Her collaboration with the Children’s Health Fund, a nonprofit committed to giving healthcare to underprivileged children and families, was one of her most noteworthy projects. Tina became an advocate for this cause because of her own struggles and her steadfast faith in the healing effects of healthcare and education.

Brand Ambassador

It comes as no surprise that companies sought to take advantage of Turner’s timeless appeal. Tina Turner has portrayed a variety of products, including Hanes, Pepsi, Converse and Plymouth autos. Turner starred in several Pepsi ads from 1987 to 1990, including Rod Stewart and David Bowie. Pepsi supported Turner’s “Break Every Rule World Tour” concurrently.
