Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch is a British actor who has a net worth of 40 million dollars. The actor, who has become the face of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is currently set to star in the mega movie, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ that will release on December 17, became an international sensation for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series ‘Sherlock’.

Early start

Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976, in Hammersmith, London, England, and grew up in a family of actors. Because of this, he was sent to attend the prestigious Harrow School on an Arts scholarship. The school ignited his acting career as he was involved in numerous Shakespearean plays. He graduated from the University of Manchester, where he majored in Drama and from there, he went on to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. And that’s where it all began.

Acting on his own

His professional acting career began in 2000. He made his debut in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ when he was just 12. He also worked on projects like ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ and as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series ‘Sherlock’.

Cumberbatch has appeared in multiple successful theater, film and television productions. He’s built his name and fame around playing roles of leading men with “issues”. In 2004, Cumberbatch landed his first main television part when he appeared as Stephen Hawking in ‘Hawking’. 

He later performed his most iconic role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series ‘Sherlock’. In 2014 he starred in ‘The Imitation Game’, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cumberbatch first starred as Doctor Strange in a film with the same name. He went on to play major roles in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and will now star in ‘Spider-Man: Now Way Home‘.

Cumberbatch married Sophie Hunter an opera director in the year 2015. They have two sons, Christopher Carlton and Hal Audren.

What he does for charity 

Cumberbatch is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust. He works with multiple organizations that use arts to help disadvantaged young people. He supports organizations like Odd Arts, Anno’s Africa and Dramatic Need. Since his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in 2004, he was chosen as the ambassador for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Benedict Cumberbatch uses his net worth for generous donations for charities and fundraisers to support The Willow Foundation and the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children.

In 2014, Cumberbatch joined Prince William and Ralph Lauren for a cancer awareness fundraising gala for the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. He posed for Jason Bell, a photographer to celebrate 10 years of the ‘Give up Clothes for Good’ charity campaign. That campaign raised $17 million for Cancer Research UK.

He has also fronted a video campaign to help the charity Save the Children in its mission to aid young Syrian refugees as well.
