Her road to fame

Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar or Cardi B was born on October 11, 1992 in Manhattan. Card grew up in The Bronx, New York City. Her father is a Dominican and her mother is a Trinidadian and she has seven siblings. Cardi attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology, post which she began stripping at the age of 19.

To date, she credits it as a positive experience. She dropped out of the Borough of Manhattan Community College to work on her career. In 2013, she began to gain popularity as some of her videos went viral on social media apps like Vine and Instagram. She soon developed her stage name “Cardi B”. As creative as that sounds, it’s a derivation of Bacardi, the famous rum brand.

In the beginning 

Cardi was cast in the VH1 reality television series ‘Love & Hip Hop: New York’ back in 2015. Two seasons later she announced in 2016 that she left the show to focus on her own budding career in music.

Cardi B’s musical debut had come in November 2015. She was featured on singer Shaggy’s remix of his single “Boom Boom” alongside Jamaican dancehall singer Popcaan

Her big break came in 2017 when she signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. In June that year, Cardi B released her debut single ‘Bodak Yellow’ with Atlantic Records. The single steadily climbed the charts, hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2017.

Cardi B was the first female rapper to reach number one with a solo single since Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ in 1998. ‘Bodak Yellow’ was certified septuple platinum by the RIAA. It received nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 60th Grammy Awards and won Single of the Year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.

Her second big break came from her album “Invasion of Privacy” in 2018. The album was number one in the United States, and all her songs in that album were charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Cardi B was the first female artist to chart 13 entries simultaneously the Billboard Hot 100.  Time and Rolling Stone magazine named “Invasion of Privacy” the best album of the year. 

It didn’t stop there

Cardi’s creative pursuits didn’t stop with music. Her film debut came in the 2019 film ‘Hustlers’. She also worked on the film ‘F9’. What’s next? Her next venture was with Chance the Rapper and T.I. as a judge on the Netflix competition and talent search series ‘Rhythm + Flow’ back in 2019.

Business adds to Cardi B net worth

Cardi got her first endorsement deal with the New York lingerie chain Romantic Depot. She worked on ads for the brand and they appeared on radio and cable TV. Some of her other partnerships include MAC Cosmetics, Gypsy Sport, Reebok and Pepsi. She released her clothing in 2018 with the fast-fashion clothing brand Fashion Nova.

Personal life

In 2017, Cardi B got engaged to rapper Offset. Her engagement ring alone cost $550,000. They later married and had their daughter Kulture Kiari in July 2018. Later in 2022, Cardi filed for divorce from Offset. However, they managed to sort their issues out and are currently happy in their married life. They also share a 2-month old son.

In 2019 the couple bought a mansion in Buckhead, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, they paid $5.79 million.

Cardi B uses her net worth is used for good as well. At the peak of the pandemic, she donated $1 million to coronavirus relief. She also gave away 20,000 meal supplements to New York medical workers. Cardi B used her net worth and her money to team up with a national retailer to give away $1,000 each hour to individuals hurt by the pandemic.

She received a backlash from her fans on Twitter for buying a bag worth $88,000. In response to the backlash, Cardi agreed to match fans’ donations to various charities. Her Tweet read. “Any charity or foundation drop your receipts under the comment I will match what you donated and match your donation to that same charity or foundation,” Cardi wrote. “Let’s match energy.”

Cardi B did a charity drive in memory of late actress Naya Rivera with an independent youth outreach center in Killeen, Texas. The center fights for Antiracist Research and is a non-profit civil rights advocacy organization Color Of Change.
