If you are wondering from the title what Gen Z is, here is your answer. It is the generation that falls after the generation of millennials. They are new blood and novice in many things. Investments are one such thing. Gen Z has already been criticized for their investing habits and is often advised to learn from their older generations such as baby boomers, millennials, and Gen X.

Yes, it is true that Gen Z has less experience in investing but they are also breaking a lot of ceilings that have been set by the previous generations. They are going through the fastest and the most unexpected economic conditions, especially because of the pandemic. Also, a lot of Gen Z are going to enter the realm of investing for the very first time, so they are basically novices. This generation may not follow the advice of their grandparents, parents, or elder siblings, but they will definitely look after what their friends (Gen Z) are doing. It is basically Gen Z learning from Gen Z. And more often their choices are not all wrong.

Investment and Gen Z

Generation Z is rebellious and would not obey the elders as the previous generation did. They believe in investing in various financial instruments such as Mutual Funds, stocks, exchange traded funds (ETFs), and more. This was not the case for baby boomers because they believed in stability and saving money.

Investing in equity is not losing money but yes there are certain risks involved in that. Generation Z is skeptical of the investment system because they are young and they need personalized products which the banks are not able to provide at the moment, which wasn’t the case with their parents.

They believe in diversifying investment portfolios

It is a common perception that Gen Z has an aggressive way of investing and believes in taking a risk. But the fact is that they have a diversified portfolio that includes stocks but also includes other forms of new assets such as SPACs and cryptocurrencies. More than 73% of Gen Z are invested in company stocks, which is a safe bet compared to alternative investment options as per a survey by the Motley Fool. They are learning how to get started with basic investment options and know how to play in the stock market.

Invest with their heart

There is a lot of criticism for Gen Z for their investment choice, but they are also the ones that are starting a movement toward investing in sustainable stocks. The term here is ESG – Environmental, Social, Governance. This generation has helped in putting more than $50 Billion in ESG during the last year. Five years ago, this amount was just $ billion.

This generation believes in investing in companies that have a purpose, serve the masses, and improve the environment. They want to invest in a company that is going to make a difference in the world.

The bottom line

Gen Z is new when it comes to investing, but in many things, they are starting their own notion and changing the world of investment. All they need is a little support, confidence, and the attitude of learning from mistakes in order to succeed in this field. And that thing doesn’t seem impossible. In the near future, we will see more innovation by Gen Z in the investment field for sure!
