There are numerous ways to sell old clothes online, and each platform has unique features. Here are some great places to sell clothes online.

TheRealReal.com

Designer items like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, or Chanel may sell for thousands of dollars on TheRealReal.

Types of clothes: Designers for women, men, and children.

Process

To sell old clothes online, you would be sent a free or prepaid shipping label. You must print it out and attach it to the package. In some locations, you can either drop off the package at one of The RealReal’s locations or schedule a pickup at your house.

TheRealReal will set the price based on market trends and the condition of the clothes. You would not get your payment after every sale, but you will receive a commission for everything sold over a month — with at least 55% for a total sale of $1,500 or less. You will receive a check or direct deposit on the 15th of the following month. You can also choose site credit that increases the commission rate by 5%. For certain nonclothing items like watches, handbags, and sneakers, an option of claiming a certain percentage during the first two weeks before they sell is available.

ThredUP.com

ThredUP is known for selling various brands of women’s and children’s clothing. They also sell secondhand children’s clothing.

Types of clothes: Everyday wear

Process

You can send the clothes in two ways:

1. You can request a shipping label by email, print it out, and paste it into your box for shipping.

2. You can request a labeled bag. It would reach you within two weeks.

3. You need to use FedEx or the U.S. Postal Service to ship the clothes.

Requirements

The clothes must be new or freshly laundered without any damage, heavy usage, or alterations. If your clothes are accepted, you will receive 60% to 80% of the profit for expensive garments and 5% to 15% for those below $19.99 and above $5.

If clothes are rejected, the clothes would be sent for recycling. However, you can choose the Return Assurance option if you want your clothes to be returned to you for a fee of $10.99. It would be automatically deducted from your earnings. If none of your clothes are accepted, all of them would be returned without a fee.

Poshmark.com

Types of clothes: Everyday wear.

Process

You can post women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and accessories in good condition on the app and website. You can list the items on your own by posting the photos, setting the price, and writing the description. If you make a sale, Poshmark will email a United States Postal Service (USPS) Priority shipping label. You can package it as per your liking and attach the tag.

Poshmark would claim $15 to 20% of the final listing price for $15 or more. You would be paid three days after the buyer receives the item. They also have a feature called Posh Parties. They are events that appear during the day with a specific theme on the app. You can submit items based on the theme that occurs each day.

Grailed.com

Types of clothes: Menswear

Process

You can post your clothing, shoes, and accessories of any category: luxury designers to streetwear to common brands to rare and vintage.

If one of your items is sold, you would be sent a United States Postal Service (USPS) shipping label to attach to the package. After the package is delivered, you will be paid via PayPal. The commission is 9% on all sales, and since they use PayPal, you would be charged some fee for that as well.

Swap.com

Types of clothes: Everyday wear

Process

Swap.com has clothes, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children. They only accept clean clothes, not used extensively, and ones that are at least $5.

You don’t have to pack anything, you just have to send them the clothes and Swap.com would do everything else required. After a sale is made, you would get your share of the profit.

However, unlike others, they charge for inbound shipping: $14.99 for sending your box of clothes. There are fees as well; they charge $5 if 40% or half of your package, and you will get 15% in cash. For items that cost more than $8, you will get 70% in cash — you must pay a processing fee for this. You would be paid in cash only if you have earned $10. They would either transfer funds to your bank or mail a check. Like other stores, you can choose credit and make purchases on the website instead of getting cash. The credit option is more profitable than getting paid in cash.

Tradesy.com

Types of clothes: Designers for women

Process

Tradesy is a resale platform. On this site, you can post low-quality images item’s retail price and ship it.

Fees
Tradesy would charge $7.50 for anything under $50 and a 19.8% commission on everything else. You can redeem your earnings for either cash or store credit. If you choose money, 2.9% would be added for debit cards, checking accounts, or PayPal transfers. If you choose store credit, you can avoid the 2.9% that is added.

Other ways

The websites mentioned above are exclusive to selling old clothes online. You can also post them on other sites that can sell photos, anything like Etsy or eBay. These sites accept clothing, shoes, and accessories as well.

If you want to sell old clothes online to people nearby in your neighborhood and avoid shipping, you can post them on Facebook Marketplace, VarageSale, Nextdoor, or Craigslist. You must remember that these sites will not work like consignment stores, you must post on your own informally and deal with the buyer directly.

Some tips for making most of the websites

Clean and fresh

Wash or dry-clean the clothes before posting them for sale. Polish shoes and handbags and fix them if they have some issues. Use strong packaging material to prevent damage during shipment.

Clear photos

If you have to post photos on the site, take bright and clear pictures. It will help your clothing to get more clicks and stand out. If you have a camera, you can use that to take pictures instead of a mobile phone. You can also learn how to take good pictures of products online. It’s always better to take pictures with a plain background.

Honest description

Essential details like size, brand, and condition should be included. You can also add other information like fitting, material, etc. Items that have scratches or have been used for a while will not be sold very soon. If your item has some defect, you must mention it clearly. Otherwise, your seller rating will decrease and you would not be able to make even a single sale.

Price

You can do some research and find the right selling price — not too high, not too low. If the item is not being sold, reduce the price, and update the photos and description.
